Spring in the Ozarks is beautiful, but it's also the most critical time for your lawn. The actions you take between March and May will determine the health of your turf for the rest of the year.

Here is your essential checklist for waking up your lawn and preparing it for the hot Missouri summer ahead.

1. Clean Up Winter Debris (March)

Before you do anything else, clear the canvas. Rake up dead leaves, fallen branches, and any other debris that has accumulated over winter. This isn't just for looks—matted leaves can smother grass and create a breeding ground for snow mold and other fungal diseases.

2. Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicide (Mid-March)

Timing is everything. You need to apply pre-emergent crabgrass preventer before the soil temperature consistently reaches 55 degrees. In Springfield, this is usually around the time the forsythia bushes start blooming. If you wait until you see weeds, it's too late for pre-emergent.

3. Service Your Mower (Late March)

Don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to try starting your mower. Change the oil, replace the spark plug, clean the air filter, and most importantly—sharpen the blades. Dull blades tear the grass, causing brown tips and stress.

4. The First Mow (April)

Wait until the grass is actively growing and dry. For the first mow of the season, you can cut it slightly shorter to remove dead tips, but never scalp it. After the first cut, raise your deck. For fescue lawns in Missouri, 3.5 to 4 inches is the ideal height to shade the soil and retain moisture.

5. Fertilize (April/May)

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer to feed the root system. Be careful not to over-fertilize with nitrogen too early, as this can promote rapid top growth at the expense of root development, making the lawn more susceptible to summer heat stress.

6. Seed Bare Spots (April)

While fall is the best time for overseeding fescue, spring is okay for patching bare spots. Just remember: pre-emergent herbicide stops grass seed from growing too. You cannot seed and prevent weeds at the same time unless you use a specific product like Mesotrione (Tenacity).
